HYDERABAD: The Osmania University police arrested five persons, including four police constables and an ex-constable, in a cheating case on Tuesday .
Police arrested Ch Venkata Rajam, 38, ex-constable of APSP I battalion, Dharavath Balu Naik, 36, constable with Armed Reserve, Nalgonda district, K Rajugopal, 40, constable at the CPL Amberpet, Malothu Srinu Naik, 35, constable with APSP I battalion, and Y Raju, 38, constable with the City Armed Reserve, Hyderabad.

The victim, K Rama Krishna, 34, is a cashew businessman from Meerpet. Rama Krishna incurred loss in the cashew business and to start the business afresh, he wanted to sell a `chintamani' stone belonging to his family, which reportedly has divine powers, for Rs 25 lakh to any prospective customer.

Rama Krishna sought the support of financier Ram Reddy in selling the stone. While Ram Reddy was making enquiries to sell the stone, one Kareem alias Rasheed, an advocate from Meerpet, met him and agreed to bring some customers.

"Kareem contacted the arrested accused and all of them hatched a plan to steal the stone from Ram Reddy . As per the plan, the accused asked Ram Reddy to come to a place behind the Art's College on the Osmania University campus with the stone on May 16. After Ram Reddy arrived there, pos ing as Task Force constables, the accused snatched away the stone and Rs 14,000 cash from him," DCP , East Zone, V Ravindar said.

On May 21, Kareem called up the complainant's father Balakrishna Murthy and said that the Task Force sleuths were willing to return the stone if good money was offered. Subsequently, Murthy along with Rama Krishna met the accused two times on May 21 and 22 at Punjagutta and Yousufguda. When Murthy wanted to examine the genuineness of the stone with a gemologist, the accused cut contact with him.

After failing to contact the accused for over a month, the victims lodged a complaint with the OU police on June 29.Cops arrested the five accused from their homes on Tuesday and recovered the stone along with two bikes used in commission of the offence. Kareem is absconding and the accused were remanded in judicial custody.
