AHMEDABAD: The state government transferred seven IPS officers late on Thursday night. The government also reinstated Abhay Chudasama, IPS officer of 1999 batch, in the Gujarat police and posted him as superintendent of police (vigilance) at Gandhinagar. "Chudasma took charge as SP, Vigilance, on Saturday," said a senior police officer.

Chudasama was under suspension for his alleged involvement in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case and had spent four years in jail - from April 2010 to April 2014. He was arrested by the CBI on April 28, 2010 and kept in judicial custody at Nadiad Jail because of security reasons. In 2013, he was transferred to Taloja jail at Mumbai. Chudasama was released on bail by the Bombay High court in April 2014.

About a month back, Chudasama had written a letter to the state home department seeking reinstatement in service. He is the second IPS officer accused in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case, to be reinstated in service. Earlier, Rajasthan cadre IPS officer Dinesh MN was posted by the Rajasthan government as director, Rajasthan Small Industries Corporation.

Meanwhile, Vadodara police commissioner Satish Sharma has been transferred and posted as IGP (security) GUVNL, Vadodara. Junagadh range IGP, E Radhakrishnan, has been transferred and posted as Vadodara police commissioner.

RJ Savani, DIG (security) GUVNL Vadodara has been posted as additional police commissioner (administration) at Ahmedabad. It is interesting that the state government chose to make these transfers two days before the Election Commission (EC) of India announced the dates for by-elections to be held for nine assembly seats and the Vadodara Lok Sabha seat in the state. On Saturday, the EC announced by-elections for 3 Lok Sabha and 33 assembly seats that had fallen vacant across the country. Voting for all the seats will take place on September 13 and the results will be announced on September 16.
