COIMBATORE: Vellalore town panchayat officials and Local Planning Authority (LPA) officials have been asked to take action on a residential building that violated norms. An RTI reply has revealed that the town panchayat president has been approving building constructions outside its jurisdiction.

"The panchayat can approve land only upto 4,000sqft and ground plus one floor. But this particular building in question has three floors each above 2,600 sqft. Moreover, they have gained approval only for 1,986 sqft," said J Daniel, a civic activist and MDMK district secretary. The building owners have moved the court after the Local Planning Authority and district administration took action against them, last year.

"We sent notices to the panchayat. All we can do is to ask them not to approve outside their jurisdiction," said a higher official at LPA. "The officials have turned blind eye to people flouting building norms and the panchayat loses money every year in the form of taxes," said Daniel.

The builder, Dennison, constructed a three-storey building in 2012 after getting approval for a residential complex. The building has two halls in two floors and a few rooms on the third floor. A private bank ATM also functions on the the ground floor.

"In 2013, I wrote a petition to the district administration asking them to take action against violators. But they moved court. The court asked them to submit a revised layout plan. And now they have begun construction of another three floor building without LPA approval," said Daniel, adding "Even though the LPA has the authority to seal the building, they have not taken any action".

When the Assistant Director of Town Panchayat was contacted, he said that they had received the petition and the direction from the collector to inspect the building. "We have found that they have violated and building plan is deviated. We will initiate action against them after Pongal," he said.

LPA official said that, they have instructed officials not to approve building construction above 4000 sqft or if it has more than one floor. "We will look into this issue," he said.

The panchayat president was unavailable for comment. When Dennison, the owner, was contacted he said, "It is my own land. I have not encroached upon government land. I am entitled to construct what I want and I will move court if necessary," he said.
