Pune: Ankush Vishwanath Jadhav (55), assistant inspector working for the highway safety patrol, was arrested on Sunday night for allegedly running over a 19-year-old teenager in Kondhwa.

The Kondhwa police said the victim, Delfina Mashahary, was a first-year student of electronics and telecommunication at Sinhgad College. She hailed from Assam and was living with her mother and sister at S Ridam society in Kondhwa. Her father works in Guwahati in Assam.

"Jadhav is posted in Sarola near Shirval in Satara district. On Sunday around 8.30 pm, he was heading towards Loni Kalbhor via Katraj bypass and Khadi Machine chowk in a crane to get diesel for the vehicle. Mashahary was riding a two-wheeler and tried overtaking the crane, when she was hit by a motorcycle coming from the opposite direction," said senior inspector Rajendra Mokashi, incharge of the Kondhwa police station.

Mokashi said Mashahary came under the rear wheels of the crane and died on the spot. She had sustained multiple injuries, he said.

The police control room informed the Kondhwa police, which reached the spot, sent the victim's body to the Sassoon General Hospital for post-mortem and arrested Jadhav, Mokashi added.

Sub-inspector Bapu Raut said the body has been handed over to the family members. Jadhav has been booked for reckless driving under sections of the IPC and Motor Vehicles Act, he added.
