COIMBATORE: A three-to-four-day-old baby girl was abandoned in front of an orphanage near Sulur boat house in the wee hours of Sunday. The baby had a gold chain and 10,000 with her. City police rescued the child and handed her over to a shelter at Vellalore.

On Sunday around 3.30am a woman left her daughter in front of Michael Job's orphanage near Sulur Boar house and fled the area.

A security guard at the orphanage heard the baby's cries and immediately informed Singanallur police station. Sub-inspector Jeyadevi and her team alerted 108 ambulance service also. The girl's health condition was monitored at the Coimbatore Medical College and Hospital's doctors and later she was handed over to the Family for Children's home at Vellalore.

"Someone abandoned her and left a gold chain, a ring and 10,000 at the spot. We rescued the child and handed her over to a home. She will be produced before the child welfare committee on Monday," said Jeyadevi. She added that the police was trying to trace the mother of the abandoned baby. But no FIR has so far been registered and a detailed investigation is on.
