KOLKATA: Next time you park your vehicle at a parking lot at a high-profile shopping mall or at the VIP parking lot of an important railway station, beware. An inter-state gang has become active in the city which is targeting cars only at plush shopping malls.

Among those whose cars were stolen is the son of Trinamool Congress councilor of ward No. 72 of Kolkata Municipal Corporation Krishna Nandi. Krishna's son entered a shopping mall on EM bypass near Salt Lake stadium parking his car in its basement. When he returned to the parking lot after shopping, their car was nowhere to be found.

Crime records show that motor vehicles were the biggest target of organized crime syndicates. At least two vehicles were stolen from the city each day. The 2014 figures that are still being collected are all set to cross the total number of auto thefts reported during 2012 and 2013. The National Crime Records Bureau data states that 661 vehicles were stolen in 2013. The figure stood at 659 in 2012. "Several auto thefts have been reported from the southeastern and south suburban areas. These areas have easy access to EM Bypass and it helps miscreants escape fast," said a source. Police have prepared a list of autolifters. They are repeat offenders, who are released on bail after staying in jails for a few months, said a police office
