THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Home minister and Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee (KPCC) president Ramesh Chennithala has made it clear that his successor for the KPCC president post will be announced by the Congress high command any day after January 9.

Chief minister Oommen Chandy and Chennithala have been called to New Delhi by the party high command to finalize the new KPCC president.

Both Chennithala and Chandy are learnt to be supporting speaker G Karthikeyan as the new president of the party's state unit. However, intense lobbying has started from within the state to elevate V M Sudheeran as the new KPCC president. This has led the party high command to convene a discussion with Chandy and Chennithala.

The All India Congress Committee (AICC) leadership has also sought the opinion of Union defence minister A K Antony in the matter. It was Antony who persuaded G Karthikeyan to take up the post of speaker when he was not given a cabinet berth at the time of government formation. Even though Karthikeyan was hesitant to take up the post, Antony was able to persuade him to do so in the end.

Allegiance to any faction in the party will not be considered while selecting the new president, Chennithala said after he called on Justice V R Krishna Iyer at the latter's residence in Kochi.

Sources said Karthikeyan is ready to accept the post of KPCC president as it would be a major achievement for him to head the party's state unit , particularly at a time when the Lok Sabha polls are approaching.

Meanwhile, the 'I' group is learnt to have pitched K Sudhakaran for the post as he has made it clear to the party leadership that he is not willing to contest in the next Lok Sabha elections. Sudhakaran has expressed willingness to be a part of the party's state unit which has led his followers in the 'I' group to lobby for him.

Since AICC vice-president Rahul Gandhi is much closer to V M Sudheeran, party leaders in the state fear that Rahul's stand will be a crucial factor in the selection process. But Chandy and Chennithala are said to be against the candidature of Sudheeran for the post, since he has taken a strong stand against certain policy decisions of the UDF government, particularly the Aranmula airport project.
