PUNE: It took one month for the government railway police (GRP) in Solapur to register a complaint of chain-snatching that happened in an express train at Nagansur in Solapur district on December 14.

Sachin Bakshi, a sales and marketing professional, boarded the Kakinada-Lokmanya Tilak Terminus Express at Secunderabad on December 14 to go to Mumbai.

At night, Bakshi's wife was sleeping in the middle berth of S-5 coach when the train stopped outside the Nagansur station around 2 am.

"Four or five men climbed on each other and snatched my wife's gold chain from the window. My wife screamed and tried to hold on to the chain, but in vain," Sachin told TOI over the phone from Secunderabad.

Sachin's wife received minor cut injuries on her neck and hand. "There was no police patrol on train. We filled the details of the incident in a form supplied by the train ticket examiner," Sachin said. On January 14, he got a phone call from the GRP, Solapur, informing him that his complaint has been registered.

Inspector Ashok Satpute of GRP, Solapur, said, "The TTE had referred Bakshi's complaint to the GRP in Bengaluru, which forwarded it to the office of superintendent of police, GRP, Pune region. The SP then forwarded the complaint to us."

Satpute admitted that a delay of one month has affected the probe. "We have started checking criminals on police record and are working on some clues. The culprits will be arrested soon," said Satpute. A case has been registered under section 392 (robbery) of the Indian Penal Code.

The Pune-Daund-Kurudwadi railway section is notorius for train robberies. Several cases of chain -snatching and bag lifting have been reported in this section by the government railway police in the last three months.
