LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Police, along with Uttar Pradesh Special Task Force (STF) and special cell of the Mumbai Police, arrested Tariq Parveen, a key operator close to Dawood Ibrahim, in Mumbai on Monday.

Tariq was arrested in connection with a 12-year-old terror case in which AK series rifles, ammunition and explosives were recovered from two youths from a guesthouse in Lucknow.

Lucknow SSP Yashasvi Yadav confirmed the arrest of Tariq Parveen.

"We had got a lead and sent a team to Mumbai. They are on their way to Lucknow," Yadav told TOI late on Monday evening.

Police have been on the lookout for Tariq after one Azizuddin, a resident of Pune, and one Jameel Ahmad of Nepal, were arrested on June 2, 1999, at a guesthouse on Shahnajaf Road in the city along with a bag containing an AK-47 rifle, ammunition and explosives. The two had told the police about their association with Dawood and Chhota Shakeel and that Tariq was their link to the dons.

Azizuddin and Jameel had also told the police that Tariq had hired them for a terror strike in or around Agra before the Agra Summit between former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and his Pakistani counterpart Pervez Musharraf.

Tariq had fled from jail in early 2000 after his name figured in an illegal shopping complex case in south Mumbai involving Dawood's younger brother Iqbal Kaskar.

They both hid in Dubai from where Kaskar was deported in 2003 while Tariq landed in Mumbai in June 2004. Tariq was also slapped with an extortion case along with fugitive Faheem Machmach in 2004 for allegedly attempting to extort money from a builder.
