MALDA: A boy with a bullet in his leg was termed fit and discharged from Malda Medical College and Hospital on Monday. Paban Das, who was writhing in pain, was hospitalized again on Tuesday.

Sahapur in Old Malda turned into a battleground on Monday centering a land dispute. Villagers alleged that local Trinamool Congress leader Pandab Das was trying to grab land in the region. Following a scuffle with villagers over this reason, Pandab fired from his revolver. The 14-year-old boy, Paban, was shot in his leg.

Paban's father Abinash Das said: "My son was at home. Hearing the ruckus, he rushed outside. After a while, a villager informed us that Paban was shot at. I ran to the spot to find him in a profusely-bleeding state. I immediately took him to the medical college. But, the doctors there informed us that there was no bullet inside my son's body. Paban was released on that very night."

But Paban suffered from excruciating pain on Monday night and had to be taken to a nursing home on Tuesday morning.

An x-ray there found a bullet to be lodged at the joint of his ankle. Around 11am on Tuesday, he was again taken to the medical college. But Abinash alleged that there was no doctor to attend to Paban till 1pm.

Vice-principal of the medical college M A Rashid conceded: "There was a mistake on our part on Monday. The doctors should not have released him without confirming the presence of the bullet."
