CHANDIGARH: Protesting PCMS doctors on Sunday met Punjab health minister Surjit Kumar Jayani, who assured them of issuing a circular against checking of doctors at the hands of junior revenue officials.

A delegation of doctors from Punjab Civil Medical Services Association held a meeting with Punjab health minister Surjit Kumar Jayani at his residence in Chandigarh on Sunday. Following the meeting, general secretary of the association, Dr Gagandeep Shergill, and patron of the association Dr Daler Singh Multani, said in a press release that apart from other demands, the most important demand was to stop humiliation and victimization of doctors at the hands of junior revenue officials.

The association held a meeting with the minister following an incident that happened on March 21, when Jaswant Singh, posted as tehsildar at Chamkaur Sahib in Ropar district, conducted inspection at a local hospital. Doctors had raised objection saying that they being Class-1 officers were senior to the tehsildar (a Class-2 officer) and he had no right to check them. The tehsildar was also found sitting on the chair of senior medical officer.

The association said that while these unauthorized inspections dampen the morale of the doctors and health workers, it also leads to waste of precious time meant for the sick and poor patients. The association said that the minister assured that he will issue a circular in this regard that no official below the level of deputy commissioner will be allowed to inspect the hospitals.
