KOLKATA: If the Metro and the monorail promise to keep Rajarhat New Town moving fast on the tracks, commuting on the road won't be tedious either. To mobilize the public transport system and pull the township out of the mess, which has often been dubbed as a commuters' nightmare, the New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) is planning to start granting permission to battery-operated rickshaws.
A communication from the state transport department that battery-operated three-wheelers can be given permission by a civic authority and that they will not fall under the Motor Vehicles Act has prompted the NKDA to give the e-rickshaw plan a second thought.
"We have been planning to introduce pollution free e-rickshaws in New Town for some time. These e-rickshaws suits the green concept that is being followed to develop the township as a smart city," said NKDA chairman Debashis Sen.
The state transport department recently sent a communication to the state municipal affairs department and Hidco saying a local civic authority can grant permission to ply battery-operated rickshaws.
The NKDA will now place the plan in the board meeting for approval. Earlier, the NKDA was taking legal advice on this as there were some issues under the Motor Vehicles Act as to whether a civic authority could give permission for battery-driven three-wheelers.
Officials said that running battery-operated three-wheelers will greatly improve the transport system without creating pollution. The concept is to have a personalized rapid transit system in place where vehicles will be battery-operated, pollution free and will ply on short and dedicated routes.
Earlier, Hidco authorities had written to the power ministry seeking its views on whether it was feasible to run battery-operated vehicles in the township. The authorities had also made trial runs
Officials said that such battery operated e-rickshaws plying over short routes in the township will be very useful to move from one action area to another. At present, buses travel from Action Area I towards the city and the only mode of transport to move in action areas II and III are autos and shuttle cars, apart from private cars and taxis.
