LUDHIANA: Director general, ESIC AK Aggarwal visited the ESIC Model hospital and found major problems in its functioning. The hospital has no waiting area, no fans or coolers for doctors as well as visitors. Sohan Lal Soni, a social worker who has been related with the hospital for a long time said, "Even registration counters have no shade for people standing in line. While many people have started getting ESIC facilities, the conditions at the hospital leave them disappointed. I took up these issues at the meeting with the director, as one of the victims of ESIC is my wife. Hospital is good, but it certainly needs more facilities."

The director general went around wards, OPD blocks, laundry, CSSD, emergency and the newly opened PACU in OT complex. He also visited dispensary No 1 and 4. After talking to patients and staff members, he suggested opening of a new ICU, a new OPD building, blood bank for ESIC patients and more beds.

As for registration he said, "Camps will be organized in different areas to make smart cards for people. Other facilities like staff will also be added so that patients can be benefited." The major issues taken up by Soni included need for coolers and pharmacy counters, shade at registration counters, washrooms for doctors, and new machines and more staff. The ESIC model hospital has only six doctors at present, of whom two are specialists.
