COIMBATORE: Coimbatore corporation has sought the state government's approval to officially sign the sister city agreement with the mayor of Esslingen, Germany, Dr Jurgen Zeiger, even though a resolution for the tie up has already been passed. Civic body officials hosted a dinner in his honour and gave the German delegation insights into the administration of the Coimbatore corporation. The mayor hoped that the process would be expedited so that corporation school students would travel to Esslingen as exchange students, strengthening ties between the two cities.

The officials welcomed the delegation at the corporation office with the Nadhaswaram, shawls and vermillion. The visitors also got to taste filter coffee and enjoy some Indian snacks.

"We passed this resolution as an assurance that the official MoU would be signed soon so that business and technological exchanges could be made easier between the two cities. Technological help to resolve two serious problems, solid waste management and maintenance of water bodies, would be sought from the German city," said mayor P Rajkumar at the council meeting.

Dr. Jurgen Zeiger said that the city of Esslingen has had a 75-year-old friendship with Coimbatore, from the time of G D Naidu. "We are thankful for the splendid hospitality that the city has given us. We already have nine sister cities in Europe and one in USA. We hope that in Coimbatore would also sign an agreement soon," said Jurgen Zeiger.

The delegation included Esslingen city's international relations officer, Jutta Fahrion and the deputy mayor, Markus Raab who is in charge of culture, sports, education and social affairs. Six councillors from various political parties such as Green Party, Socialist Party of Deutschland and Freie Wahler would also visit the city. The delegation comprised of a college principal, head of a high school, vice president of a university, two industrialists, a journalist, photographer, two musicians and two close friends of G D Naidu.

The delegation visited the Singanallur tank and Ondipudur sewage treatment plant in the afternoon to discuss technologies and exchange ideas.
