MUMBAI: The Colaba police have busted a six-member gang that shopped from various malls and five-star hotels across the country by furnishing fake demand drafts (DDs). The gang includes a senior citizen and two sisters.

Police identified the accused as Ashok Mehta (63), sisters Mini (21) and Tina Pandey (20) and their associates—Rajesh Karani (37), Surendra Punjabi and Janak Dholakia, both 58 years old. The accused have been booked for cheating and forgery. Dholakia and Punjabi are said to be the gang leaders who met over two years ago and planned the operations. The duo came in contact with the two women who agreed to work with them.

Investigators said in June 2014, the gang bought diamond jewellery for Rs 7 lakh alone from the Taj hotel in Mumbai and submitted fake DDs. The women posed as Punjabi's daughters and bought the jewellery. The Taj hotel staff later came to know that the DDs were fake.

"They have used the fake DDs for shopping in Mumbai, Rajasthan and Gujarat," said Ravindra Shisve, zonal DCP. Sources said Dholakia would identify the targets and visit the shops to check whether they would accept DDs .

The gang also tried its hand in Trident hotel but they were told they could shop only after the encashment of DDs. They also targeted malls in Bandra and Khar, Surat, Jaipur etc. The two sisters would be paid Rs 10,000 each for a trip to malls or hotels during their operations.

After their arrest, the police recovered diamonds from a rented house in Gujarat, and also seized fake DDs and fake Indian currency.
