AHMEDABAD: In a major revelation, the city crime branch has said that three Indian Mujahideen (IM) suspects who had escaped from Khandwa jail in Madhya Pradesh in October 2013 had stayed in Ahmedabad twice between July and August 2014. The crime branch had been working on intelligence inputs on this.

The three IM suspects include Mehboob alias Guddu, who is also an accused in the Ahmedabad serial blasts case of July 2008. They had stayed at a place in Shahibaug for a few days and then left for Bijnor in Uttar Pradesh.

"We have tracked down the place where the IM suspects had stayed. We have also come to know that the suspects had with them fake identity cards," said a senior crime branch official.

Crime branch sources said they were in contact with central agencies since they got the information about the IM suspects. "We have got the call details and the names of the persons they had contacted in MP and UP during their stay in Ahmedabad," said a source.

The sources said that by questioning those owning the place where the IM suspects stayed, they have come to know that the group was in touch with local people. "During questioning some people, it came to light that they were not aware of their true identity. However, we suspect that after the arrest of Yasin Bhatkal from India-Nepal border, the IM is in the process of regrouping and the possibility of sleeper cell members being active in the city cannot be ruled out," they added.

According to the intelligence inputs, said the police, the group had left for Bijnor in UP from Ahmedabad. "They were involved in blast in a house in Bijnor where they were making a bomb. The last location of this group was Bedar in Karnataka," said a police officer.

A few suspects of the Jaipur module of the IM had visited Ahmedabad in March 2014 and had stayed at a community hall in the Walled City area. "It is a matter of concern as this is the second time it has come to light that IM suspects had stayed in the city after the 2008 serial blasts," said a senior police official.
