He studied in Bengaluru and Mangaluru before he made his way to the US where he is currently dean of University of Chicago Booth School of Business. Back in Bengaluru for the IISc Global Alumni Conference, Sunil Kumar recalled his days on the verdant campus and said IISc taught him to a taught him to a lesson he continues to teach-aspire and explore.

"IISc was a transformative experience," said Kumar, who did his masters in computer science and automation at IISc. "It taught me to aspire. It taught me that it was not enough to be good in your class or neighbourhood or city. It showed me that the purpose of an education was about making an impact in the world. It taught me that it was cool to research, explore and do new stuff," said Kumar, who heads an institution which boasts of an alumni list that includes Satya Nadella and faculty such as RBI governor Raghuram Rajan and Nobel laureate Eugene Fama.

Now, he tells his students to explore and innovate. "I always tell my students that they need to take more risks considering the fact that they have a gold-plated insurance policy in the name of their degree. Stu dents need to give a shot at what they really want to do. If they fail, they have their degree to fall back on," he says.

It's this spirit of innovation that he is thrilled to see in Bengaluru. "Indians have always had the entrepreneurial spirit. The other thing that I am chuffed about is the fact that people from other countries are looking at India as a place to work," he says. "I met a few students from Italy and the US doing internships here. I find this crosspollination of international students very exciting as they get a lot in terms of experience."
