Hyderabad: Thieves fled with jewellery worth Rs 7 lakh from the Mercure Hotel on Chirag Ali Lane in Abids.

The victims had come to the city from Gujarat to attend a wedding. They had locked the door and had gone to have dinner.

By the time they returned, they found the gold missing.

The cops recovered CCTV footage which showed a man picking up a duplicate key from the reception.

The victims Narayandas Maru, 54, a trader, and his wife Nirmala Devi, came to the city last Friday.

They were allotted a room in the hotel by the marriage party. They locked the room and went to the fifth floor to take part in the dinner.

The jewellery was kept in the locker provided by the hotel.

After dinner they returned at around 11 pm, and when they tried to open the safe for keeping the jewellery it didn’t open.

They alerted the staff, who opened it, but the jewellery was missing. The cops found that a person had approached the receptionist for a duplicate key.

The staff handed over the key without verification. “He called the staff saying that he forgot the password. With the help of a security officer, the safe was opened and he fled with the jewellery," said inspector Uma Maheswar, inspector, Abids police station.
