CHANDIGARH: In a blow to the municipal corporation (MC), especially mayor Poonam Sharma, union minister of women and child development Maneka Gandhi has refused to meet the delegation of civic body, while citing her unavailability, to discuss the issue of dog menace in the city. The development comes at a time when the mayor formed a delegation of six to seven people comprising members of political parties, nominated councillors and officials to meet the union minister on Wednesday.

Gandhi told TOI, "I am not in New Delhi and will be in Chennai for the whole week. Therefore, I will not be available for any kind to discussion with the delegation of the Chandigarh MC."

The mayor said, "I neither received any message of cancellation of the meeting nor I am aware about any such development. The minister gave time on her own through her official mail to us. I will confirm once again with her about this development."

After receiving confirmation from the minster, the mayor had ordered the officials concerned to prepare all details pertaining to the dog menace in the city, primarily the date of dog bite incidents in the city, medication being provided to the affected victims and core issues to handle the problem.

After the dog bite incident in Manimajra on Wednesday, the mayor had written to Gandhi seeking a meeting to discuss amendment in the Animal Birth Control (Dogs) Rules 2001.

The mayor wanted to discuss the issues of providing a dog pond and killing rabid canines among other ideas to curb the dog menace.
