KOLKATA: In a span of two hours, the posh Park Street area turned into an epicenter of crime on Tuesday afternoon. A mother and daughter were found dead under mysterious circumstances at one of the biggest hotels on Rafi Ahmed Kidwai Road.

Park Street police say all the evidence points to murder — one planned and executed with cold-blooded brutality. The killer seems to have sedated the victims and then electrocuted them, said police.

Till late night, police had not been able to identify the victims. While the woman is aged 22-28 years old, the child is about five to seven years old. The body of the child was found stuffed into an almirah of the hotel room.

According to DC-south Murlidhar Sharma and sources in south division police, the victims checked into the hotel around 8.30am on Monday. They were accompanied by a middle-aged man. Police say they have identified him but will not reveal his name for fear of compromising the investigation. He produced his photo I-card during check-in and introduced the victims as his wife and daughter. He claimed they were tourists from Nalanda. They were g8iven room number 114.

Police say he stayed over entire Monday morning with the woman and child but left around 4pm. None of the hotel staff could remember seeing him again. They found it odd that the family did not order food at night but did not give it much thought as it was not rare for guests. The mother and child were not seen all of Tuesday morning.

At 3.30pm on Tuesday, a cleaner knocked on the door and sought permission to clean the room. When no one answered, the hotel staff called police. "We broke down the door to find the woman with her hands and legs tied up with copper wire. We found signs of electrocution on her hands and other parts of the body. Among other things, we recovered sleeping pills. It seems the woman was drugged and then electrocuted. The child was also electrocuted and dumped inside the almirah but his hands and legs were not tied up like her mother," said an investigator.

Police say that the very fact that the accused brought the victims to this hotel shows he was well versed with the area. "We are trying to recover CCTV footage with help from hostel staff and are trying to identify the accused. Statements of the hotel staff are being collected. An autopsy will give us the exact time and cause of death. We are in touch with Nalanda police," said DC Sharma.

Officers said all angles are being probed. "We are not ruling out personal enmity, an illicit relationship or even property dispute. But our first job is ascertaining the identity of the victims. We are raiding a few places in central and south Kolkata," a senior officer said.
