AHMEDABAD: A special CBI court on Friday completed hearing on bail pleas by jailed IPS officers P P Pandey and D G Vanzara and scheduled its verdict on January 28 in the Ishrat fake encounter case. CBI had opposed the bail pleas while Pandey's counsel Nirupam Nanavati said that out of 20 cops named in the FIR, only seven had been charged. Nanavati accused Gujarat cadre IPS officer Satish Verma for treating certain cops allegedly involved in the encounter as witnesses. tnn

"All this karamat (miracle) was done by Verma that he allowed people he liked to get out on default bail," he submitted.

Admitting that it was unfortunate that innocent people were killed due to intelligence input, Nanavati said that there was no other way to find out whether they were terrorists or not. However, he blamed CBI for acting on the instance of Verma, against whom the accused cops alleged bias.

The lawyers representing Pandey and Vanzara submitted that no Subsidiary Intelligence Bureau (SIB) officers, even named in the chargesheet, have been arrested by the CBI.

"Why are you afraid of former IB chief Rajinder Kumar? Had he done any favour to you? Who prevented you from arresting him?" advocate Nanavati said.
