CHANDIGARH: Parents fretting over dental decay of children can relax while they are off to school as the interns from Panjab University's Dr Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences will treat dental problems of school students of Tricity. In the proposed two-year 'Caries Free Tricity' campaign, which will be launched in a month's time by the dental college, satellite clinics will be set up in select schools of the Tricity, where check-ups and treatment for tooth decay, cavities and other common dental problems will be undertaken.

"We will adopt selected schools, which could be either government or private schools, as part of the campaign. Besides setting up of satellite clinics in these schools, rapport will be built with students and teachers. They will be educated about dental hygiene and daily habits that can lead to good oral health," said director of the institute, Dr Ashish Jain. He added that the campaign would be for two years so that after the routine check-ups, students could get follow-up treatment and adopt healthy habits for lifetime.

The idea behind such campaigns, added Dr Jain, was taking dental health to the doorsteps of people. "While people don't visit a dentist unless there is a severe problem, such easy access can drive them for routine check-ups. In schools, it's a way to teach them young," he added.

The institute already has a similar satellite clinic at Palsora. Started in 2006, the dental institute has over 270 dental chairs operatories catering to over 450 patients every day. The institute has tie-ups with departments specializing in stem cell research, University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET) and other research organizations. From this year, masters' in dental surgery course in five specialties has also been started at the institute. Dr Jain added that the institute also plans to start research-based programmes from next year.
