BENGALURU: A pigmy collector, who was kidnapped for ransom by a five-member gang, was rescued after three days in captivity. Three abductors of K N Narayanappa, 45, have been arrested.

Pigmy collectors go door to door and collect savings and loan dues from small businessmen on behalf of financial institutions.

Narayanappa, working with a private finance company, was kidnapped on January 11. His wife, N Lakshmamma and relatives received calls from his cellphone demanding a ransom of Rs 40 lakh.

Cops had a tough time tracking the calls as the kidnappers shifted their location frequently. On Thursday, police zeroed in on the abductors at a hideout near Tumakuru.

The accused, Ramesh Gowda of Peenya, Ranga alias Rangaswamy of Nelamangala and Krishnappa of Kudur in Magadu taluk, all aged above 35, were arrested. Two more accused are still at large.

Narayanappa was kidnapped near the Eighth milestone on Tumakuru highway. "Narayanappa and Ramesh Gowda worked for the same company. Ramesh thought Narayanappa had property in Peenya and his family would sell it to raise the ransom amount," police said. As planned, Ramesh called Narayanappa on January 12 saying he wanted discuss a business matter. Ramesh bundled him into a vehicle and confined him to a room. He was later shifted to an under-construction building at Obalapura in Nelamangala and to a shed at Antarasanahalli near Tumakuru.
