Pune: Investigations by the Airport police have revealed that 31-year-old Rahul Sanjay Pawar, who was arrested on January 15 after snatching a gold chain worth Rs 2.6 lakh, had been involved in seven more similar cases.

Pawar who belongs to a well-to-do family but was unemployed at the time of the robberies.

The Airport police have recovered 237gm gold worth Rs 4.64 lakh from him. "Pawar was involved in chain snatching since October 2013. He had snatched gold chains from Khese Park, Lohegaon and Santnagar, which are close to his house," said Sanjay Kurundkar, senior inspector of the Airport police station.

On January 15, Pawar had snatched a gold chain worth Rs 2.6 lakh of Sarika Khandve (33), when she was returning home from a temple on the occasion of Makar Sankranti. "Pawar was wearing a helmet, but Khandve had noted 'Indian Air Force' written on his T-shirt," Kurundkar said.

He said police managed to get CCTV footage from one of the shops. "We saw the T-shirt and carried out searches in the area. Sub-inspector Rajendra Wagh and his team noticed the man in the evening and nabbed him," Kurundkar said.

During interrogation, Pawar admitted to his involvement in seven chain snatching cases in the area. "His father owns a building and also a chawl in Lohegaon area," Kurundkar said.
