LUCKNOW: To decongest main Charbagh station, railways is contemplating to shift operation of some trains from the main station to Lucknow Junction station.

Though the proposal has been under consideration for long, now the Railway Board has sought a feasibility report on it from Northern Railway (NR) and North Eastern Railway.

The proposal is to shift operations of 10 trains, including Shatabdi Express and Lucknow Mail, to Lucknow Junction station. It will be implemented in three phases, said senior DCM, NR Lucknow, Ashwini Srivastava. Three trains will be transferred in the first phase, six trains in the second phase and one in the third phase. But it's still not clear if and when Railway Board will implement it.

The proposal, if approved, will also aid in timely operation of trains and reduce the passenger rush on the platforms. At present, many trains are made to wait at the outer because of space constraint at the main station.

Presently, train traffic is unevenly distributed between Charbagh and Lucknow Junction; latter handles less than half the number of trains as compared to the main station.

Many prominent Delhi and Mumbai-bound trains like Awadh Assam, Amrapali, Bihar Sampark Kranti, Sampark Kranti, Vaishali and Gorakhdham run from the main station

NR, however, may not agree to shifting of Lucknow Mail and Shatabdi Express from the main station since it would transfer some of its revenue earnings through sale of general tickets to Lucknow Junction station. But it's ready for shifting of other evening trains.
