CHANDIGARH: Former Punjab DGP (prisons) Shashi Kant on Friday informed the Punjab and Haryana high court that he was willing to submit a sworn affidavit giving out the names of drug lords figuring in a list that was submitted to the chief minister in 2007.

Shashi Kant made these submissions during the resumed hearing of the ongoing drug haul case before a division bench headed by Justice S K Mittal. "I had prepared quite a detailed list of bigger drug dons and their associates, who are running drug trade in Punjab. A number of politicians, including some sitting and former ministers of various political parties and some MLAs from across the spectrum were in the list, besides several others," he claimed in an application submitted to the HC.

Claiming that the state government had not taken any action on the list submitted by him to the CM way back in 2007 on the drugs issue, Kant has sought directions for the production of the list and action on it. Taking up his application, the bench has asked the Punjab government to file its reply on the issue. The case would now come up for further hearing on February 2.

The matter of drug menace in Punjab is pending before the HC through a petition filed by Shashi Kant in which he has raised the matter of narco-politics in the state. In September 2014, he had dropped a bombshell by claiming before the high court that drug smuggling worth over Rs 60,000 crore took place annually in Punjab and the money went into funding the elections in the state.
